How to keep your glass shower crystal clear

A beautiful glass enclosure stays beautiful with surprisingly little effort. Here are the pro habits — plus what to avoid — that keep shower glass spot-free, from daily squeegeeing to beating North Jersey's hard water.

Guide · 7 min read · Updated May 2026

The secret to crystal-clear shower glass is simple: squeegee the glass after every shower so water can't dry and leave mineral spots, clean weekly with a glass-safe or vinegar-based cleaner, and avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals. Add an optional protective coating and the whole routine gets dramatically easier. Do these few things and your enclosure will look new for years.

Let's break down exactly how to do each one.

The #1 habit: squeegee after every shower

If you take away one thing from this guide, make it this. Hard-water spots and soap scum form when droplets sit on the glass and evaporate, leaving their minerals behind. A quick pass with a squeegee removes that water before it can dry — so nothing is left to build up. It takes about thirty seconds and is by far the most effective thing you can do.

Keep an inexpensive squeegee mounted inside the enclosure or on the wall within reach. Pull from top to bottom in overlapping strokes across the whole panel, including the door.

What to clean glass with (and what to avoid)

For weekly cleaning, gentle is the rule. A dedicated glass-safe cleaner works well, or you can mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle — vinegar's mild acidity dissolves mineral and soap film without harming the glass. Spray, let it dwell a minute or two, then wipe with a soft microfiber cloth and rinse.

  • Do use soft microfiber cloths, a squeegee, and glass-safe or diluted-vinegar cleaners.
  • Do ventilate the bathroom — run the fan or crack a window to help everything dry.
  • Don't use abrasive scrub pads, steel wool or scouring powder — they can scratch glass permanently.
  • Don't use harsh acidic, bleach or ammonia-heavy cleaners, which can dull hardware finishes and degrade any protective coating.
  • Don't let products sit and dry on the glass; rinse thoroughly after cleaning.

Dealing with hard water spots

Much of North Jersey has moderately hard water, so mineral spotting is the most common complaint we hear. For light spots, the same equal-parts white-vinegar-and-water spray usually does the job — apply, wait a few minutes, wipe with microfiber, and rinse. For heavier, chalky buildup, a paste of baking soda and water gently lifts deposits without scratching; apply with a soft cloth, work in small circles, then rinse clean.

Prevention beats removal, though. Daily squeegeeing stops the spots from forming in the first place, and a protective coating (below) makes hard water far less likely to stick at all.

What is a protective glass coating?

A protective glass coating is an optional treatment that bonds to the surface of the glass and makes it hydrophobic — water beads up and rolls off instead of clinging and drying. Because water, soap scum and minerals can't grip the surface the way they do on bare glass, your enclosure stays clearer with much less effort, and the cleaning you do takes a fraction of the time.

It's especially worthwhile in hard-water areas like ours. We offer this coating as an optional add-on when we build your enclosure, and it's one of the most popular upgrades we install.

Tip: Ask about our optional protective glass coating when you order your enclosure. Applied to brand-new glass, it repels water and soap scum from day one — cutting your cleaning time and keeping the glass crystal clear far longer, especially with North Jersey's hard water.

Your simple weekly cleaning routine

Beyond the daily squeegee, a quick weekly clean keeps everything pristine:

  1. Rinse the glass with warm water to loosen any film.
  2. Spray on a glass-safe cleaner or equal-parts white vinegar and water.
  3. Let it dwell for one to two minutes so it can break down soap scum and minerals.
  4. Wipe in overlapping strokes with a clean microfiber cloth.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with warm water so no cleaner is left to dry.
  6. Squeegee the glass dry, then buff any remaining spots with a dry microfiber cloth.

Caring for hardware finishes

Your hinges, handles and clips deserve gentle treatment too. Wipe metal finishes — Chrome (CH), Brushed Nickel (BN), Matte Black and the rest — with a soft damp cloth and dry them to prevent water spots. Skip abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals here as well, since they can strip or dull the finish over time. A little care keeps your hardware looking as good as the glass.
